ZTL zones in Italy – the sign that can cost you dearly
A single sign can cost you hundreds of dollars – without you realizing it.
ZTL zones (Zona Traffico Limitato) are one of the most common tourist traps in Italy.
What does ZTL mean?
ZTL stands for Zona Traffico Limitato – areas where only residents and authorized vehicles are allowed to drive.
Typically found in:
- historic city centers
- Small, narrow streets
- Areas with a lot of tourism
Why do so many people get fined?
ZTL zones are monitored by cameras that automatically detect license plates.
- One wrong driveway = fine
- Zigzagging in the same area after a parking space = more fines
It’s not uncommon to get 3-5 tickets in a matter of minutes.
Why your GPS won’t help you
Many GPSs do not display ZTL boundaries correctly.
- You can be guided directly into a zone
- Without warning
How to avoid ZTL fines
- Look for signs with a red circle
- Avoid driveways unless you are sure
- Park outside the city center
- Walk or take a taxi in the city center
