But Italian traffic can also come as a culture shock to many Danes.  <\/p>\n<p>For Italians, driving is often more about rhythm, flow and situational awareness than about following the rules to the millimeter. It may seem chaotic for the first few days &#8211; but once you understand the dynamics, driving in Italy becomes easier and much more relaxed. <\/p>\n<p>Here are 12 concrete driving tips that can save you stress, fines and unnecessary holiday frustrations.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Traffic is more &#8220;fluid&#8221; than rule-driven<\/h2>\n<p>In Italy, the rules are followed &#8211; but often with a certain flexibility. Drivers read the traffic and each other more than they read the signs. <\/p>\n<p>This means, among other things, that you&#8217;ll see cars parked in the strangest places with their hazard lights on. It&#8217;s not necessarily legal &#8211; and certainly not something you should copy as a tourist. <\/p>\n<p>The most important advice is therefore:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Drive calmly. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Follow the traffic flow. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Be predictable.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you seem unsure or hesitant, it often creates more anxiety than calm and clear driving.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Right of way does not necessarily mean full stop<\/h2>\n<p>Even if others have the right of way, it doesn&#8217;t always mean they come to a complete stop. Many people &#8220;sniff&#8221; slowly at intersections and roundabouts to signal their intention. <\/p>\n<p>It may seem provocative to Danish eyes &#8211; but it&#8217;s a very normal part of traffic culture.<\/p>\n<p>Keep eye contact, stay alert and always be ready to brake &#8211; even when the law is on your side.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Roundabouts work like in Denmark &#8211; but the pace is faster<\/h2>\n<p>In modern Italian roundabouts, the same rule applies as in Denmark:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Traffic inside the roundabout has the right of way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But Italians often drive close and fast. So it&#8217;s rarely a good idea to squeeze in. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s better to wait an extra second. It makes for a much more relaxed experience. <\/p>\n<h2>4. Speed cameras are everywhere<\/h2>\n<p>Italy uses many automatic speed cameras &#8211; the so-called Autovelox.<\/p>\n<p>The typical speed limits are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>City: 50 km\/h<\/li>\n<li>Road: 90 km\/h<\/li>\n<li>Highway: 130 km\/h<\/li>\n<li>Highway in the rain: 110 km\/h<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pay attention to local signs as boundaries often change.<\/p>\n<p>And yes &#8211; the fines come to Denmark too. Sometimes several months later. <\/p>\n<h2>5. The horn is often communication &#8211; not anger<\/h2>\n<p>In Denmark, the horn is often associated with irritation. In Italy, it is used more as a communication tool. <\/p>\n<p>A horn can mean:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;m here&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Now I&#8217;m driving&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Thank you.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Watch out on the bend&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Especially on narrow mountain roads, the horn is actively used before tight turns.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, many Italians use their turn signals more sparingly than we are used to. So pay extra attention to your surroundings. <\/p>\n<p>And most importantly: Don&#8217;t take the horn personally.<\/p>\n<h2>8. Scooters are everywhere<\/h2>\n<p>Especially in cities and along the coast, scooters and motorcycles are a constant part of traffic.<\/p>\n<p>From:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overtaking on both sides<\/li>\n<li>Driving close<\/li>\n<li>utilizes even small openings in traffic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So check your mirrors extra carefully &#8211; and never open a car door without checking first.<\/p>\n<h2>9. Safety equipment is required by law<\/h2>\n<p>In Italy, the car must contain, among other things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>warning triangle<\/li>\n<li>reflective vest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The reflective vest should be used if you leave the car on the road.<\/p>\n<p>Snow chains in Tuscany &#8211; in short<\/p>\n<p>From November 15 to April 15, special rules apply in many areas.<\/p>\n<p>You must either have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>winter tires marked with M+S and snowflake symbol<\/li>\n<li>OR snow chains in the car<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The requirements apply especially in mountainous areas and higher parts of Tuscany.<\/p>\n<p>Most rental cars have snow chains in the trunk &#8211; but it&#8217;s always a good idea to check.<\/p>\n<h2>10. Calmness breeds respect<\/h2>\n<p>Italian traffic may seem hectic, but temperament rarely helps &#8211;<strong>quite the opposite.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Calm and defensive driving works best.
